Robin is the sidekick to Batman and his first appearance was in 1940 in “Detective Comics” #38. The first Robin was Dick Grayson. Grayson was a son of the flying Grayson’s John and Mary, a circus acrobatic group and was called little robin by his family.  While performing in the big tent their trapeze was sabotaged by Boss Zucco’s gangsters. This was done so that Boss Zucco could extort money from the circus while it was in town.

Bruce Wayne was in attendance when the murder of the flying Grayson’s happened. He felt an immediate kinship with Dick Grayson. Bruce had lost his parents in a hold up attempt years earlier. Wayne took the orphaned Grayson in. Later Grayson discovers Wayne’s secret. Bruce Wayne is Batman.

Soon Grayson was the sidekick of Batman. He took the name Robin to honor his parents. Robin became Batman’s secret weapon. Almost immediately Robin started making enemies of Batman’s foes; most notably Two Face. Every time Two Face looked like he had a win over Batman, Robin would swoop in and save the day. Robin became the focus of Two Face’s rage for many years.

There have been several Boy Wonders. Jason Todd becomes Robin once Grayson left to become Nightwing. Todd’s reign as Robin did not last long. He was killed by a crowbar wielding Joker.

The next Robin was Tim Drake. He used his detective skills to figure out Batman’s secret Identity. Drake was the first Robin to change the Robin costume.  Later he leaves the Robin persona behind to become Redwing.

The first female Robin was Stephanie Brown. She became the vigilante known as the Spoiler to stop her father the Clue Master, and was for a time girlfriend to Tim Drake. She stopped being Robin to become Batgirl.

The last Robin was the ill-fated Damien Wayne. Damien was the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul. He was trained as an assassin since birth and was given over to Bruce Wayne for his own protection.  Batman polished Damien’s rough edges and Robin once again became a sidekick that Bruce could rely on. Damien made the ultimate sacrifice to save Gotham proving to all that he well deserved the responsibility of being Robin and would have been a great Batman.

Out F@#king Cold

Rumble at the Rock
Rick: We have not done an Out F’N Cold in a while but this one deserves a look. This KO takes place in the United Kingdom at Say Uncle Fight Night 2. Knock out was during an amateur brawl. I understand that these fighters are fairly new to the fight game. What I do not understand is the lack of basic training both fighters display in boxing and kickboxing.

Macedo and Audin touch gloves and together they get into a fight stance where both hands are floating at chest level. There is little head defense shown. Audin throws a half hearted jab. She was not really trying to connect. Macedo lefted a leg for a kick but changed her mind half way through. Audin did not react to the kick faint. She kept her hands around her chest and under her chin. Audin threw another half hearted jab that Macedo cat slapped away. Macedo shifted forward and Audin faded back. Then Macedo entered with a round house to the thigh, and Audin did not try to block but accepted the impact. Audin’s hands never moved from her chest defense. Macedo attempted a straight left that connected but backed off to check her work. Audin’s hands now suspended at her waist, Macedo unloaded a round house to Audin’s midsection and again Audin did not try to defend. The women reset and Audin challenged with her third sort of jab. This time Macedo cracked another kick that looked like it was aimed for the bread basket. Audin went for the shield but she had been fooled and when her arms dropped Macedo adjusted and shot the kick over Audin’s low guard. The kick connected under Audin’s chin and out she went.

Tony: Well when I first saw this, even though this was an amateur fight, I have to be critical of the performance. I don’t want to come off as being an ass but clearly these girls were not taught to keep their guard up when fighting. This reminded me of a fight between two hoodrats and the result was about the same. I have to give it to Macedo, that was a well-placed and well-timed kick to Audins’ head and the sound of that impact was priceless. I felt bad for Audin, but she took it like a champ and even posted on facebook she was back to training and her chin was OK. I hope she got her head checked out after the way it bounced like a basketball hitting the floor after a monster dunk! Damnnn! Just watching the kick makes me cringe. The safety of all fighters should be the focus of the amateur fight promotions and fight teams. Trainers should absolutely make sure that their fighters are well trained so that there is less of a chance for injuries. Fighters will be fighters and are prone to forget all their training once they get into the ring. We know this from experience with our own fighters. You can’t fix stupid they say but you can try to teach it to keep it’s hands up.

Superhero Sunday

The Dark Knight, the World’s Greatest Detective, or the Caped Crusader as Batman is sometimes is known was created by Bob Kane in 1939. His first appearance was in DETECTIVE COMICS #27. Batman is one of DC Comics’ superhero trinity along with Superman and Wonder Woman. Where Superman is a solar powered alien and Wonder Woman a magically created Amazon warrior, Batman is a normal man. He has perfected his body through training and his mind with education. He is an illustrious strategist and always seems to be two moves ahead of his quarry.

The man behind the mask is Bruce Wayne, the extremely wealthy international playboy. This persona is the fa├žade that Wayne uses to hide his extracurricular crime fighting activities. Bruce Wayne witnessed the murder of his parents and it was this event that placed him on the path of retribution.

Batman has many enemies in his rogue gallery. The clown prince of crime, The Joker, is the polar opposite of Batman’s serious dark nature. Catwoman proves that conflicting lifestyles attract and Batman has had an on again off again sexual relationship with this villainess. The Riddler is the mental challenger for the Dark Knight. There are many others each one being more outlandish then the next.  My favorite present day villain is Gearhead.  He is a low level criminal that lost his arms and legs after a confrontation with Batman. Nathan Finch had fallen into freezing water causing terrible frostbite and the loss of him limbs.  He had his limbs removed and replaced with cybernetic implants. He now has a plethora of attachments and armaments that he uses in his quest to exterminate the Bat family.
