The first time the Nightwing name was used it was by Superman. This was during his adventures in the miniaturized kryptonian city of Kandor. It was here that Batman and Robin teamed up with Nightwing and Flamebird (Jimmy Olsen). This adventure stuck in the mind of the young impressionable Dick Grayson. When Grayson decided to walk away from being Robin, Batman’s sidekick and become his own man he adopted the moniker Nightwing. This was done to honor his heroes Batman and Superman.

Dick Grayson
Dick Grayson was Nightwing for thirteen real time years (1996-2009). He retired the name when he became Batman after the apparent death of Bruce Wayne. Grayson proved himself a capable Batman. He became Nightwing once again after Bruce Wayne appeared with a tale of being lost in time and fighting to get back to the present.

Nightwing started his crime fighting in Bludhaven at the request of Batman. Grayson now resides in Chicago but he is always on call to help out in Gotham.
